The Online Dispute Resolution (ODR) platform operated by the European Commission for out-of-court dispute resolution in online commerce\u00a0will be shut down on July 20, 2025.<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n

The ODR platform was introduced by the European Commission in 2016 based on the EU Regulation on Online Dispute Resolution for consumer disputes in e-commerce (ODR Regulation) and has been operated ever since. Certain companies are required to make reference to the ODR platform and, in particular, to provide a link to the platform on their website and in their terms and conditions. However, many companies, particularly online retailers, are not obligated to participate in dispute resolutions initiated by consumers via the ODR platform.<\/p>\n\n

Since this platform is rarely used and has been deemed ineffective, the European Commission has decided to repeal the ODR Regulation with effect from July 20, 2025, and to discontinue the ODR platform at the same time. Starting March 20, 2025, no new complaints may be submitted via the ODR platform.<\/p>\n\n

What Are the Implications for Affected Businesses?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

The regulation (including the information requirements) on which this is based will also expire with effect from July 20, 2025.<\/p>\n\n

  • Websites and legal texts must be updated:<\/strong>References and links to the ODR platform must be removed by July 20, 2025 (the information obligation remains in effect until then!). This applies in particular to the legal notice, terms and conditions, and, where applicable, other informational texts on your website or in customer communications.<\/li>\n\n
  • Consumer information must be reviewed:<\/strong>Ensure that the obligations to inform consumers about alternative dispute resolution\u2014which will continue to apply to many businesses even after July 20, 2025\u2014are being met.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n
